Controlling the animal population is paramount. Our spay and neuter initiative is a top priority.

geographically targeted community outreach

An important facet of improving the health and well-being of the Coconut Hounds and Coconut Cats on our island is dedicating time and resources to controlling the animal overpopulation problem through geographically targeted spay/neuter clinics in our Community Outreach areas.  If we can spay one dog or cat then that prevents a litter of puppies or kittens who would have likely had many litters of their own, and those litters would also have had litters.  So through effective spay/neuter we can literally reduce the population of unwanted animals by tens of thousands of animals.

We target animals that are in our Community Outreach Program as that is the most effective way to maximize the success of this program.  By working with animals that we visit on a monthly basis, we can ensure that the animals are healthier when they come into the clinic, that they are watched over after their surgery, and are also supervised over the long-term to better ensure their survival. Targeting geographic areas also allows us to create zones of healthy animals and then we can move our efforts on to a new area.

We thank all the volunteer vets from the United States and Canada who help us out as well as our Dominican vet friends.

We hold mobile clinics throughout the island with the help of volunteer vets from the United States, Canada, the Dominican Republic, and from around the world. Well-trained volunteers fill all the roles required for a clinic (besides the surgery) such as; check-in, anesthesia, cleaning instruments, drawing up meds, animal wrangling, surgery assisting, prepping the animals, and recovery.

We customize our clinics to whatever number of days and whatever the length of days the visiting vet would like to volunteer.  We are always looking for new vets to help us out and so if you are a vet or know of a vet who might be interested in traveling here email help@dcdr.org.

teamwork is everything

Dogs and Cats of the Dominican Republic has also teamed up with volunteer groups such as World Vets, Pets Without Vets, and Caribbean Spay Neuter to host mega spay/neuter clinics with many vets and many vet techs graciously donating their time and talent to fix hundreds of animals over a few days.  These are an extremely effective way for us to accomplish our goal of helping to improve the health and welfare of our Coconuts Hounds and Coconut Cats.
