Welcome to COCONUT HOUND HAVEN!

A safe place off of the streets for those in need

Dogs and Cats of the Dominican Republic is extremely proud to have developed relationships with rescuers throughout the island which now enables us to be able to oversee 2 animal sanctuaries located in Luperon (Puerto Plata), and Punta Cana. Our uniquely designed Havens allow animals at our facilities to not have to be kept isolated in small cages or small runs, but rather they are allowed to live in family units in expansive areas that provide lots of room for running, playing, and interacting.  Experience has shown us that the best therapy for many Dominican dogs is being with other dogs. Our facilities allow us to take in well over 100 needy animals off the streets at a time, get them healthy, get them socialized, and then get them adopted.

🐾 Coconut Hound Haven – Punta Cana

Located in the vibrant Punta Cana region, this sanctuary offers a peaceful retreat for rescue dogs in need. Since opening in 2020, it has grown into a safe, spacious environment where dogs can heal, play, and prepare for their forever homes.

🌴 About the Haven

Coconut Hound Haven in Punta Cana cares for approximately 40 dogs, with a focus on maintaining a balanced environment that allows for proper attention, enrichment, and socialization.

🌿 Special Features

This haven is designed with comfort and space in mind:

  • Large, airy kennels that prioritize dog wellbeing

  • Expansive garden and outdoor areas for exercise and play

  • A relaxed setting that supports both recovery and rehabilitation

💛 Meet Canela

Canela, our longest resident, has been with us since 2020. She was rescued from a dangerous area near a busy highway, where her life was constantly at risk. Today, she is safe—and a quiet reminder of why this work matters so much. Her journey reflects what Coconut Hound Haven is all about: stepping in when it matters most, and providing a safe place to land.

🔨 Current Projects

We’re continuing to enhance the sanctuary with:

  • New garden play areas to give dogs more room to run, explore, and thrive

🙋‍♀️ Visiting & Volunteering

Visitors and volunteers are always welcome through pre-arranged coordination via the DCDR website or through approved volunteers connected to the haven. We aim to create meaningful, organized experiences that support both the dogs and the people who come to help.
